The cottage, rated 3 star for quality, was restored in 2009 and retains many original features, including an open fire place. There is double-glazing throughout, and a combination gas boiler provides full central heating and “always available” hot water.
Sleeping accommodation comprises 2 bedrooms - 1 double (that can be converted to a twin with full size single beds) and 1 twin with full (adult) size bunks. The master bedroom gives an excellent view of the passing steam trains, which typically run at “snail’s pace” past the cottage from 09:00hrs to 18:00hrs in the Summer season (approx. every 30 minutes). There is a double sprung sofa-bed in the lounge that can also be used, subject to prior agreement, to accommodate an additional guest.
The kitchen is newly fitted, with washing machine, dishwasher, gas oven & hobs, microwave and fridge/freezer.
The bathroom has a corner-bath, overhead shower, basin and toilet.
The lounge/dining room provides a “front-row” view of the passing trains as well as the nearby signal box and signals. There is a flat-screen television/DVD with access to all freeview satellite channels. An open fire completes the mood! WIFI is scheduled to be installed from March 2011 and you will also find a great collection of games, books & magazines to enjoy during your stay.
The property is semi-detached and located in a small hamlet, surrounded by the stunning countryside of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park which provides excellent walking. The cottage has its own parking spaces for two vehicles, and a private enclosed patio area with BBQ for alfresco dining. At the rear of the cottage, a wooden bench is positioned to provide an ideal place to watch the trains go by. Across the lane from the cottage are footpaths and open space.
One emerging pleasure for many guests is the visiting birdlife! Feeding stations positioned outside the lounge window regularly attract a rich variety of colourful local birds, including visits from a woodpecker.
The market town of Pickering can be reached easily by car or by walking (approximately 15to 20 minutes using a very quiet lane or across woodland footpaths). Pickering has a castle, many restaurants, fine pubs and shops and is a great place to be based. The cottage is also a short walk from the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, whilst a short drive will lead you into exquisite open moor land. All fuel and power is included in the rental, and a basket of logs, for added cosiness and atmosphere, is provided in Winter months! All bed linen and towels are provided. A cot and high chair are available on request, but please bring your own cot linen.
A welcome pack is provided that comprises some basic provisions (e.g. milk, tea-bags etc). However, please contact us if you would like us to do some further shopping for you before you arrive!
Please also note that we have made the patio (and train viewing area!) as safe as possible - this is gated and completely enclosed by fencing. Children will find great excitement in watching the old-fashioned signals and trains, but clearly must be supervised at all times. The property is adjacent to a level crossing and a manned signal box - the stretch of track is used for the steam trains to exchange tokens with the signal-man, and as such, they travel very slowly (at “snail’s pace”), often completely stopping outside the cottage!
We regret that the cottage is available to non-smokers only. Sorry no pets. Changeover day is flexible.
